4th Brave Knight Nets $90,000 for Research
We’d like to thank everyone who helped make The 4th Annual Brave Knight Benefit our most successful event yet raising $90,000 for pediatric brain tumor research in one very special night. Held on November 29 to mark the fourth anniversary of Julian’s diagnosis, 325 supporters gathered at The Townsend Hotel to honor Julian and many other children who have fought or who are currently fighting brain tumors and raise funds for research.
Party-goers were in a festive mood as they mingled among the hotel draped in beautiful gold and silver holiday decor. Guests enjoyed a strolling dinner, open bar, dancing to the tunes of the ever-popular Good Gravy Band and late-night pizza from Primo’s.
The 70 packages featured in the silent auction offered trips, sporting events, tech toys, jewelry, guitars and more including a special painting by Pittsburgh pop artist Baron Batch that gave a nod to Team Julian’s heroic “Super J” logo. The always crowded wine raffle table pulled in more than $3,000 while two other raffles – one for a sparkling stocked bar cart; the other the Grand Prize wine trip to Sonoma brought in another $7,500.
Julian’s father Brad led the evening’s program in which he highlighted the year’s accomplishments, the foundation’s partnership with the DIPG Collaborative and introduced special guest speaker, Keith Desserich, founder of The Cure Starts Now Foundation and The DIPG Collaborative. Desserich eloquently underscored the crucial and unique role the DIPG Collaborative plays in funding critical research that could ultimately lead to the “homerun cure” for all cancers. Together, the moving speeches followed by an inspiring video about Julian and the foundation produced in the style of a superhero movie trailer inspired guests to donate $18,000 in less than five minutes. All of this in combination with generous attendees and sponsors brought the net fundraising total for the night to $90,000 that will now fund research grants vetted and approved by the DIPG Collaborative’s Medical Advisory Council, as well as programs at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital specifically dedicated to the young patients fighting brain tumors just as Julian did.
